Virus Like Particles

Virus-Like particles (VLP) consist of non-infectious empty viral capsids. These particles resemble the virus from wich they were derived but track viral nucleic acid, meaning that they are not infectious. 

These empty capsids can be easily manufactured in yeast and bacterial expression system. They are composed of multiple viral antigens lacking viral DNA or RNA.

The human immunes system, which is in charge of attacking foreign viral structures, reacts to the VLP nanoparticle as it would to a natural viral infection with an aggressive and coordinated humoral or cellular response to the antigen proteins incorporated into the VLP.

The type of response created depends on where antigens insertions and fusions are made.
